What Is Detoxification?

Firstly, it is important to understand what the term detox means. From a medical perspective it refers to removing harmful and addictive substances from the body. The process of detoxification can be understood by the physical phenomena known as diffusion. The chemistry of diffusion process says that elements move from far areas of higher concentration to those of lower concentration. The detox process begins after 2 to 3 days when carrying out a detox cleanse or fast. The body goes into autolysis [Autolysis is a process of the body digesting its own cells. In the body’s wisdom, it selectively decomposes those cells and tissues which are in access, diseased, damaged, aged and dead].

Recently detoxification has found a more mainstream definition as a short-term weight loss diet.  This isn’t what detoxification is about! Detoxification is an ancient practice and has long been used as a way to reset; both the body and the mind to maximise health and longevity.

Beauty comes from the inside out, therefore detoxing begins with our internal organs which support all detoxification pathways. This includes our kidneys, liver, lungs, skin and the lymphatic system.

While digestion and elimination aren’t necessarily the prettiest processes, if you don’t address the issues through detoxification, you can easily get bloated, gassy or constipated. 80% of the body’s immune system is in the digestive system, so improving our digestive system is one of the most beneficial ways to improve overall health.

Done right, a detox can support the body’s regenerative processes, decrease inflammation in the body and improve digestion and boost immunity.
